Key4Life - Our background

Key4Life was formed in 2012 as a direct response to the riots across England in the summer of 2011. Those riots and the high levels of re-offending by young ex-prisoners brought home to us the scale of the problem facing many of our young people today and the extent to which many of them are becoming adrift from mainstream society.

It was apparent to us that there was a need for a new innovative approach to support the rehabilitation process for young ex-offenders and help them on the path to stability.

The overall objectives of Key4Life are:

  1. To help each young ex-offender realise their potential in life.
  2. To prevent reoffending.
  3. To build stable families and therefore more stable communities

Only 7% of Key4Life participants have re-offended, compared to the national rate of 64% one-year post-release.

And our participants are four times more likely to be employed a year post-release.

We have identified five main areas of help:

  1. Help the offender to see life differently by offering new ways of thinking and a new approach.
  2. Show the offender how they can fit back into society and understand the valuable contribution they can make.
  3. Help the offender overcome difficulties in accessing opportunities such as work placements and jobs.
  4. Offer ongoing support to offenders pre and post release through mentoring.
  5. Offer family and community support, particularly to families of young offenders who feel isolated. Family support is often critical in assisting the young offender on a new path and Key4Life encourages positive relationships through its activities.

Our work bridges the gap between prison and a new start in life for the young men through services delivered pre and post release including:

  • Deliver a unique personal transformation programme which addresses damaging mindsets and behaviours.
  • Offer continued support for offenders via mentoring
  • Collaborate with partner organizations.
  • Introduce the young ex-offenders to training, work placements, and employment opportunities.
