Key4Life - our programmes

The 7-STEP MODEL designed by Key4Life consists of:

STEPS 1 TO 3

  • Equine (horse) therapy in the prison and outside
  • Group and one-to-one emotional and behavioural support workshops
  • Music therapy, working with the music industry & individual artists
  • Non-physical football and boxing
  • An introduction to mentors
  • Employability workshops with companies who carry out mock-interviews in the prison
  • A final action plan developed prior to young men leaving prison

STEPS 4 TO 7

  • A dedicated Key4Life caseworker helps during the transition back into the community
  • An experienced mentor who helps establish life/employability skills and action plans (for up to a year)
  • New interview attire, getting the men ‘suited and booted’
  • A three-day work placement followed by an employment search, helping the men discover a meaningful occupation
  • Family engagement programmes
  • Residential
  • Graduation
  • Alumni programme trains many men to become Key Mentors, receiving a qualification to help give back to others

THIS MODEL IS USED ACROSS BOTH PROGRAMMES

Prison programme

The 12-month programme is for young men aged between 18-30 who are about to be released from prison and who have stated their clear intention to change their life.

The first three steps of the model are delivered whilst in prison and take about 3 months. These stages involve: football with QPR, music sessions, equine therapy, unlocking trauma, preparation for work with CV writing, mock interviews with up to 30 companies and matching the young men with their mentors to establish the mentoring relationship.

The other four steps are carried out in the community once released from prison.

At Risk programme

The six-month, community-based ‘At Risk’ programme is for young men aged between 18-30 who are at risk of going to prison or have been in prison and got released.

The saving to the taxpayer for the ‘At Risk’ programme outweighs the cost of putting the young men through prison and all other related costs (police, courts etc).
